We will never forget Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s trailblazing activism and soaring vision for a just America. Today we are left with the eloquence of his words that continue to guide us forward. On this day of remembrance we:
- Keep in mind that Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s name resonates with the fight for freedom from segregation and civil rights justice for people of all racial backgrounds and classes.
- Take a moment to understand that people still face marginalization, bigotry, and discrimination.
- Encourage you to continue discussing how stigma and stereotype are still persistent and tenacious in communities.
- Ask you to have open and honest discussions, even though these topics remain taboo in some communities.
For, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. intended to create a legacy of acceptance and open-mindedness to all individuals. He understood, perhaps better than most, that all people have a unique role to play in the fight for freedom (which includes freedom from stigma and stereotype).
There is still power in the dream. Continue to pursue the footsteps of courage. Remember it takes empathy, patience, and compassion to overcome anger, hated, and resentment.
Today we encourage you to continue moving forward in your path to wellness. Know that we all face challenges, but that they are not all the same. Understand that “if you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
