We can make a difference when we talk to our local legislators!
Each year State Capitol Day events bring advocates together with state and local public officials to share information and discuss priorities that need to be considered during the legislative session. There are numerous advocacy day events that occur during the session. This year the New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition, along with the New Mexico Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the New Mexico 988 Crisis and Access Line, and several partner mental health and suicide prevention organizations have come together to create an opportunity for advocates to meet with their local legislators during the 2024 session.
We encourage you to join us in Santa Fe on February 14, 2024 to speak about suicide prevention efforts that need to be made a priority in our legislative policies and budgets.
These personal connections between advocates and lawmakers have allowed bills to be enacted that now require suicide prevention policies and personnel training in K-12 schools, increased suicide prevention on college and university campuses, require insurance plans to treat mental health and physical health equally, support 988 continuum of care services, and allowed for the creation of statewide suicide prevention offices and task forces. Many thanks to all of the advocates who strive to make your voices heard each year at the various State Capitol Day events!
We look forward to having you join us on February 14 to advocate for suicide prevention, raise awareness about the need for increased suicide prevention and mental wellness initiatives, and show your support of these important conversations that move legislative policies and budgets forward.
