The holiday season is poised as a time full of joy, hopes, and gatherings. However, with the increased demands and expectations people experience during this time of year, it can also bring feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. So, as the year comes to an end, we hope you can take some much needed time to take care of yourself, reflect, spend time with loved ones, and think about strategies that assist with a path to wellness:
- Connect with others: People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of anxiety and depression. Moreover, studies show people who connect with others also have higher self-esteem, greater empathy for others, are more trusting and cooperative and, as a consequence, other people are more open to trusting and cooperating with them.
- Acknowledge Your Feelings: You may feel forced to present yourself as happy, even when you do not feel that way. It’s important to be realistic with yourself about how you are feeling. It is normal to feel sadness, anger, and grief. Take time to express your feelings, cry, etc.
- Be Realistic: You do not have to be perfect or like last year! In fact, trying to live in a way that “should be” can be a major source of anxiety, stress, and depression. You can change and adapt. Find new ways to live your life. You may find this new way of doing thigs brings new memories.
- Plan Ahead: Planning ahead may prevent last-minute scrambling and avoid accumulation of stress. Set time aside for for the things you need to do.
- Set Boundaries, Say No: Know yourself and your limits when it comes to gathering, connecting, and participating in events. Saying yes when you know you should say no can lead to feelings of resentment and overwhelm. Friends, colleagues, and loved ones will understand if you can’t participate in an activity. Make sure to take time for yourself.
- Physical Health: Physical and mental health work hand in hand and can affect one another. In a season that has many foods and drinks to enjoy, know yourself and avoid overindulgence, as this can add to stress and guilt. Enjoy the food and drinks, though continue healthy habits (such as getting plenty of sleep, avoiding excessive alcohol and drug use, exercise, etc.). Avoid comments about weight and stay away from negative messages on social media.
