Formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the National 988 Lifeline consists of a network of over 200 local crisis centers that combine local care and resources with national standards and best practices.
In New Mexico calls, texts, and chats to the 988 Lifeline are answered by the local New Mexico Crisis and Access Line.

New Mexico 988 Crisis and Access Line counselors are trained to listen empathetically, respond non-judgmentally, offer in the moment support, and assist you in accessing resources when appropriate.
When you call the 988 Lifeline, you’ll hear an automated message giving you the following options:
You’ll hear music as your call connects.
People who text “TALK” to 988 will be connected to the local crisis center that is equipped to respond to texts for your area code.
People texting from a 505 and 575 area code are routed to the New Mexico 988 Crisis and Access Line for support from a skilled, trained crisis counselor.
If the local crisis center is unable to connect with the visitor, the text is then routed to a national backup center for support.

Online chat visitors are asked to answer a few survey questions before being connected for support.
A skilled, trained crisis counselor at the crisis center your engagement was routed to will answer the call, text, or chat.
The crisis counselor will listen to you, understand your concern and how it is affecting you, provide support, and get you the assistance you need in that moment.
